Why Apple Maps matters for AI answers
Apple Maps is the default map on every iPhone, and Siri answers spoken local questions from the same place data. Bay Area AEO lists voice assistants that draw on the same data, like Siri, among the platforms it optimizes for. When a customer in the car asks Siri for a plumber nearby or for the hours of a bakery, the answer comes from the Apple place card. If that card is unclaimed, its facts come from whatever Apple's data partners supplied, and the owner has no say in them.
Apple Business Connect is the free tool for claiming and editing that card. It is less familiar than Google's tool, which is why so many Bay Area place cards still carry old hours or a former phone number.
Claiming the place card
Sign in to Apple Business Connect with an Apple Account that belongs to the business, not to one employee. Search for the location and claim it. Apple verifies by phone call to the listed number or by document upload, so the listed phone number needs to reach someone during business hours on the day of the claim. Businesses with many locations can request bulk access.
| Field on Apple Maps | Copy from the fact sheet | Watch for | Match? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name and category | Fact sheet name; the closest Apple category | Categories assigned by a data partner years ago | ☐ |
| Address and map pin | The fact sheet address; the pin on the actual entrance | Pins on the wrong side of a building or block | ☐ |
| Phone and website | Fact sheet values | Numbers that no longer ring | ☐ |
| Hours and special hours | Regular and holiday hours | Seasonal hours left over from last year | ☐ |
| Action links | The booking, ordering or reservation link | Links to a third-party service the business no longer uses | ☐ |
| Logo, photos and cover | Current brand images | Partner photos of a former storefront | ☐ |
Procedure
- Check the card as a customer
Open Apple Maps on an iPhone, search the business and screenshot the place card, including the reviews section and the photos.
- Claim and verify
Claim through Apple Business Connect and complete verification.
- Correct the facts
Work the match sheet, starting with the address and the map pin.
- Add action links
Connect the booking or ordering link so a customer can act from the card.
- Post a dated promotion if it fits
Business Connect lets owners post short, dated promotions on the place card. Use one for a seasonal service or an event.
- Run the Siri test
Ask Siri two questions from the panel and one direct question about the business's hours, and record the answers.
CHANGE LOG ENTRY
Write one line per edit, in this order: date, platform, field, old value, new value, who made the change, and the fact sheet version it follows. Example: 2026-11-12 · Apple Maps · Map pin · rear parking lot · front entrance on Main St · listings lead · fact sheet v3
Ratings shown on the card
Apple Maps shows its own customer ratings and, for many places, review content from partners such as Yelp. The owner cannot edit those reviews from Business Connect, which is why the review language SOP and the Yelp SOP matter for Apple too. A strong Yelp page shows up on the Apple card that Siri reads.
Reading the Siri test
Voice answers are short. Siri may give one business, read its rating and offer directions. Record three things: whether the business was named, whether the hours or address Siri read aloud match the fact sheet, and which business was named in its place if it was not. A wrong spoken detail almost always traces to the place card or a partner listing, so the fix comes back to this sheet.
Done when
Where Apple's data comes from
Before an owner claims a card, Apple fills it from data providers and public sources. That is why an unclaimed card can show a phone number the business dropped years ago. Claiming the card puts the owner's values ahead of those feeds, but the providers keep publishing their copies elsewhere. If a corrected field reverts, search the old value on the web, find the directory still carrying it and fix it there through the directories SOP.
An example from wine country
Visitors in Napa and Sonoma plan whole days with their phones, and many of them use iPhones. A tasting room's place card should carry its reservation link as an action, hours that reflect the season and photos of the actual tasting space. Bay Area AEO's winery page lists the facts AI needs to build a day: location within the valley, nearby lunch spots, parking, accessibility, and dog and kid policies. The place card and the website should state the same version of each.
Repeat the Siri test after each quarterly check, with the same three questions, and file the answers beside the earlier ones so the change is visible.
